A statement of purpose
Jus politicum is an online journal devoted to the exploration of the connections between the law, the political thought and the history of modern constitutions. That constitutional scholarship should take such a strongly inter-disciplinary form is perhaps less obvious today than it was in the past. Constitutional history has long ceased to stand at the core of the study of political systems, and historians of political thought seem almost routinely to exclude the law from their consideration. Yet an overly rigid adherence to legal positivism on the part of academic public lawyers has resulted in a regrettably one-dimensional account of the subject. Our purpose is to restore the ties between what have come to be regarded as different social sciences, with a view to furthering the understanding of constitutional values and practices. Not only does such an undertaking require the co-operation of scholars from different fields (lawyers, historians, philosophers, and political scientists) but it is also, by its very nature, not restricted to any one particular jurisdiction. As a result, Jus politicum is run by an international board and will have three working languages: French, English and German.
As an online journal, Jus politicum will publish different kinds of texts, reflecting the diversity of today’s scholarly work. « Articles » will host accomplished works, around a specific topic in each issue. « Papers » will host texts reflecting a work still in progress, or unpublished seminar papers. Texts contributed under both these heads will be peer reviewed. Additionally, the journal will aim at making available classic texts that were previously unpublished or had become unavailable in print and it will host roundtable discussions of leading contemporary scholarship in constitutional law, thought and history. Finally, as soon as possible, podcasts from conferences or interviews will be freely downloadable from our site.
We are also pleased to announce that, thanks to the support of Dalloz publishing, a selection of articles from the online journal will appear every autumn in a printed yearbook.
